World Health Day: The Role of Nurses and Midwives in Facing COVID-19

The World Health Organization (WHO) raises the theme to support the role of nurses and midwives in celebrating World Health Day 2020. It is known that nurses and midwives play an important role in the management of health services, both in hospitals, maternity hospitals, and clinics.

In a stable condition, the services of nurses and midwives are needed in health care, even more in emergencies such as the COVID-19 pandemic that is experienced by almost all countries in the world. All health workers such as doctors, nurses, midwives, epidemiologists, nutritionists, public health experts and researchers in the health sector are working together to confront COVID-19. In some countries such as Australia and Ireland, associations of nurses and midwives are calling on all nurses and midwives to contribute together to fight and treat positive patients with COVID-19.

An example is the Federation of Nurses and Midwives in Australia who express their gratitude for nurses, midwives and even retired people who have supported and responded to COVID-19 quickly. In Ireland, the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) calls on all nurses and midwives to care for themselves as they treat patients with positive COVID-19 because they play an important role in treating and dealing with positive patients with coronavirus. NMBI is also grateful for the contributions of nurses and midwives in emergencies as they are today.

The Chief Executive Officer of the International Council of Nurses stated the existence of a COVID-19 pandemic required nurses to be responsive in the face of this outbreak, even though it would endanger themselves because they often met at-risk patients, therefore proper personal protective equipment was needed to keep the nurses in order avoid the virus and prevent a death like the SARS outbreak in 2003, many nurses died in the middle of their work. Hope in the future, when the COVID-19 outbreak passes, there needs to be appreciation and appreciation for what nurses have done.

Let us support the role of health workers, especially nurses and midwives in dealing with the COVID-19 emergency situation. We can help provide appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) for nurses and midwives who are treating COVID-19 patients in the Hospital. Many platforms have raised funds to help provide appropriate PPE for health workers, one of them is the Summit Institute of Development. Hopefully, some of the provisions set aside can save nurses and midwives from the coronavirus and become full support for their important role.
